LOST, 8" x 12" x 6", Fired Clay with Acrylic Paint and Plaster
As I was thinking this project through, I definitely struggled with figuring out one representative layer that I felt really drawn to, and started looking more into the concept of organic, looking at textures in nature. I chose to manipulate the clay before firing, so it will allow me more flexibility to deal with the medium. As I was working on the clay to create this organic texture, I found myself really enjoying the spontaneity of the process. It was then that I realised that the externalized layer itself would be a representation of how my mind works by showing the process. The colours are made up of only the three primary colours and are ever-changing, reflecting the spontaneity and the complexity of my thoughts and imagination when they start overlaying one another.

I find organic textures/ forms fascinating, as they are typically made up of intersection of simple geometries, arranged in different ways. I think using an organic form will give my identity an interesting layer in multi-dimensional way. In architecture, we study all these straight line geometries (in ND's program), and I have never felt like I completely fit into the program, and I have a yearning to explore modernist theories. By adding or subtracting my bust with these organic layers, it represents these thoughts breaking out, and they do not apply to just architecture. Growing up in Hong Kong, and seeing my peers go on to pursue law or medicine, I feel the same way. By combining addition and subtraction, it shows how these thoughts could eat away at me at times, or they add a colorful layer to my identity.
